The History of Pizza

DINE IN – PICKUP – DELIVERY – CATERING

The queen loved the bread, and decided to take matters into her own hands. Summoning Chef Rafaelle Esposito from his pizzeria to the royal palace, the queen ordered him to bake a selection of pizzas for her pleasure. To honour the queen, who was beloved by her subjects, Rafaelle decided to make her something very special. He baked a pizza topped with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil (to represent the colors of the Italian flag — red, white, and green).

Today, Pizza has admirers all over the world! Their pizza creations have flair, style, colors and flavours that reflect every cultural taste and appetite. There are an almost endless combination of pizzas, offering ingredients such as anchovies, black olives, bell peppers, crab, Canadian-Style Bacon, Chicken, Crushed Garlic, Fresh tomatoes, Hot crushed peppers, eggplant, pineapple, onions, olive oil, sliced or ground pepperoni, meatballs, sausage, shrimp, Jolina cheese and much, much more….

At Sicilian Gourmet Pizza & Pasta, you will notice the difference these quality ingredients make. Everything we serve is homemade: the pizza crust, the sauces — we even pick the fresh vegetables ourselves! We use “real” whole-milk mozzarella cheese, and our select meat toppings really make a difference. But that’s not all – our signature pizzas are cooked on stainless steel screens to create a nicely textured, crispy, golden brown crust that is especially delicious. The dough is hand shaped and stretched by our talented pizza chefs, who rhythmically toss it with aerobatic precision (we made the ceilings higher to allow for this incredible feat), before placing each one on the cooking screens and carefully topping them with ladles-full of delicious homemade pizza sauce and special Italian seasonings. The pizzas are then covered generously with thin-sliced, whole milk mozzarella cheese.

Pizza-like concoctions migrated to America with the Italians in the latter half of the 19th Century. By the early 1900’s, pizza had made its way into the inner cities with different pizza styles, and was introduced to Chicago by a peddler. Celebrities of Italian origin, such as Jerry Colonna, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante and Joe DiMaggio all devoured pizzas.
